Frequently Asked Questions
What age do I need to bring my child for an eye examination?
There is no specific time when you should first have your child’s eyes tested, but this should be done before he/she starts school. Family history can be an influence, but if you notice any problems such as squinting, or have any particular concerns then bring them along for a test.
Do my lenses have to be so thick and heavy?
Today there are many options to reduce the thickness and weight of your spectacle lenses. We offer a wide range of lenses from several different manufacturers; we will always discuss you individual prescription and lens requirements.
How often should I have my eyes tested?
This depends on many factors such as age, previous and family history. We would recommend everyone, even if they consider themselves to have normal vision to have a test every 2 years.
At cope opticians we operate a reminder system to ensure your eyes are tested at the most appropriate interval.
What is Dry eye syndrome?
Dry Eye syndrome is the decline of the quality or quantity of tears that normally keep our eyes lubricated and healthy. Hormonal changes due to the normal ageing process are the most common cause, although other factors such as medications and extreme environmental conditions are known to contribute to the syndrome.
Dry Eye cannot be cured, but it can be managed using lid hygiene strategies and with medications that we can supply.
Are contact lenses difficult to use?
Many people are nervous about touching their eye but during a contact lens appointment you will be shown how to put lenses in anout out safely and efficiently. After a bit of practice you'll wish you'd done it sooner!
Plus, if you opt for daily lenses, they can be worn once and then thrown away meaning no special fluids are needed. If you would prefer a resuable monthly lens for example, solutions are widely available and come in a single bottle for ease of use.

What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a common eye condition that can usually be corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses. It is caused by an eye that is not completely round and occurs in nearly everybody to some degree. For vision problems due to astigmatism, glasses, contact lenses, and even vision correction procedures are all possible treatment options.
A person's eye is naturally shaped like a sphere. Under normal circumstances, when light enters the eye, it refracts, or bends evenly, creating a clear view of the object. However, the eye of a person with astigmatism is shaped more like a football or the back of a spoon. For this person, when light enters the eye it is refracted more in one direction than the other, allowing only part of the object to be in focus at one time; Objects at any distance can appear blurry and wavy.
